December is probably the most festive and fun-filled month in America. Sparkling holiday light displays set nights ablaze with color and gaiety. The artist Norman Rockwell, famous for painting American holiday family scenes, frequently had a Christmas puppy in his paintings. Sometimes it was the main subject of the piece. But NOWHERE is there a hint of the the hidden costs of a holiday puppy.
This post is dedicated to the thousands of Christmas puppies that will end up surrendered to one of America's overcrowded shelters. A tragedy that causes the death of far too many healthy beautiful dogs who are already there simply waiting for their forever home.
The attached two links lay out the problems of Christmas puppies. The Woof is an online ezine devoted to all things "animal welfare." Their article, "The Reality of Christmas Litters", succinctly lays out why you should avoid holiday puppies. https://thewoof.org/animal-welfare/the-reality-of-christmas-litters-why-you-should-avoid-holiday-puppies
The other article on Pets Radar, gives more sound reasons for NOT getting a puppy for Christmas. https://www.petsradar.com/advice/puppy-for-christmas
Please share this information with other in your circle who are thinking of getting a puppy during the MOST hectic time of the year. In this way, we can create a ripple to stem this yearly problem that burdens our shelters and rescues who are already overwhelmed by the numbers of dogs and cats in their care. And let us not forget the mothers in the mills _forced to pump out these puppies without a break.
